This beautiful Pontypool Toleware Handpainted Tray, with pierced galllery and gilt border, dates from circa 1840.

It is decorated with Fruit, Flowers and Foliage in colours that remain bright and vibrant. The open-work basket, containing Strawberries, is a delight.

There are the remnants of an old paper depository label on the back, for the Army and Navy Stores and with the Owner’s name, Lady ?oskins (presumably Hoskins).

The Tray is in good condition with only minor wear to the paint. The pierced gallery is misshapen in places.
