PAIR OF ANGERSTEIN ROSEWOOD PRIE DIEU CHAIRS c1840

£985.00

SKU: 1487

This rare Pair of Wm IV Rosewood Prie Dieu Chairs date from circa 1840.

They are both stamped on the side rail ‘W. Angerstein’.

I believe this could be an Inventory Stamp for William Angerstein (1811-1897), Liberal MP for Greenwich 1865, High Sheriff of Norfolk 1872 and resident of Weeting Hall, Norfolk (demolished 1954).   He is the grandson of John Julius Angerstein, a ‘prime mover’ in Lloydd’s Insurance, whose famous and extensive Art Collection formed the basis of The National Gallery, London.

The Chairs, which retain some of their original patterned ticking and all of their horsehair stuffing, vary slightly in dimensions – made, perhaps, as His & Hers, one being slightly taller and thinner.   As can be seen from the photographs they have matching brass castors to front and back.

The Chairs are in good, original condition.  The upholstery needs a little attention on the backs and a new top cover.

I can visualise this Pair of Chairs either side of a fireplace.
