GREAT EXHIBITION BLUE & WHITE CRYSTAL PALACE PLATTER 1851

£385.00

This English Blue & White Transfer Printed Pottery Platter commemorates The Great Exhibition of 1851.  It shows a view of The Crystal Palace set within a Border of swags and panels representing the Arts and Sciences.

The back bears the Maker’s Mark for Pinder, Bourne & Hope, Fountain Place, Nile Street, Burslem (1851-60) and the Pattern Name Crystal Palace,  As this Firm was founded in 1851, he year of the Great Exhibition, this may well have been one of their first commissions.

The subsequent owner of this Platter thought it of such importance that they wanted to display it on the wall and, very skilfully, drilled two holes in the well through which to pass a hanging wire.
