C & A PAINTER SHIP & TURTLE TAVERN TURTLE SOUP JAR

£135.00

SKU: 2134

This Victorian Stoneware Jar dates from the 1880s.  Its proud history is detailed on the front in impressed lettering and the Royal Coat of Arms, in relief.

It reads:  C & A Painter, Purveyors to HRH The Prince of Wales, Ship & Turtle Tavern 130 Leadenhall Street, 1 Pint.

It would have held Turtle Soup.

Charles and Adolphus Painter were Licencees of the Ship & Turtle Tavern in Leadenhall Street where, according to Peter Cunningham’s Handbook of London 1850, “some of the best turtle in London is to be had”.

London’s famous ‘Cheese Grater’ building now stands on the site.

The condition of the Jar is good with no restoration.  There are the expected nicks to the top rim and a thin, surface chip to the foot rim.

Height:  4.75 inches (12 cm)

Express delivery within the UK is included.  Please email for Overseas Delivery Costs.
